What is the difference and possible advantage over using a 1098 timing gear cover over a 948 one?
Thanks

A 'proper' crankshaft pulley oil seal! The 948 had a felt seal that was not very reliable. The lip seal fitted to the later covers should not leak at all if the cover is fitted properly.

Only the early 948 had the silly felt seal. You don't see many now, but Islip is right make sure you get one that takes the new seal.
When you refit it do not tighten all the bolts at once, fit them loosely and centralise the cover on the crank shaft by fitting the pulley and wiggling the cover till its right then tighten it up. Its easy to get it out of line - then it will leak!

Be sure to give the new oil seal a smear of grease before fitting the cover.
