I am replacing the pinion oil seal on my rear axle, my manuals say to replace the distance piece before torqueing up the pinion nut to 140 ftlbs. I cannot find anyone who lists this distance spacer, can anyone help.

You may have to go to an axle specialist to get one, have you checked with one of the spares specialists that they don`t keep them as not everthing is listed on the websites.

All the spacer does is set the pre load of the diff. The preload soon slackens off after a few hundred miles, so just re-use the original spacer, it will be fine.

You do NOT have to replace anything on the Minor pinion assembly is does not use the 'crushable ' pinion spacer. You just replace the seal
which is not the same as the rear hub seals and then re torque to 140 ft lbs.

I agree with the above, as I changed mine earlier in the year and it all went back fine, in fact I couldn't believe how worn the seal was - it should have been pouring out!

mine is the same, I am thinking of giving the pinion a wiz on the lathe to polish the surface because it is that bad.

it was the seal that was worn, the pinion was fine!

I had to take my axle which was off the car to the tyre and exhaust centre and get them to loosen it with the impact socket - even then we struggled! - After 45 years it didn't want to shift.

Sensible way to do it. Not so for me. 3 foot socket bar extension and a lump hammer. First Blow, extension bar flew up and smashed a light fitting. Replace bulb and start over. Thump Thump Thump, vice breaks off the workbench :o Repair workbench and vice mounting. Several thumps later and the socket breaks, buy new socket.

Luck of the draw. The last one I worked on undid by hand! I still cannot believe that the pinion nut is only held by a spring washer.

luckily I shifted both of my pinion nuts with a bit of gebtle heat and a breaker bar
