valve numbering

hello there
is any body here able to help me .
my son has a Austin 1100 . it has the same morris engine as my 1000 series . as of late it has been playing up.
i know what needs to be done. i need to adjust the valves
below is what it says in the Haynes manual

VALVE FULLY OPEN CHECK & ADJUST
VALVE No 8 VALVE No 1
ll ll 6 ll ll 3
ll ll 4 ll ll 5
ll ll 7 ll ll 2
ll ll 1 ll ll 8
ll ll 3 ll ll 6
ll ll 5 ll ll 4
ll ll 2 ll ll 7

pg ref: go to page 46 of your manual :D

All i need to know is which valve is which E.G No8 at the back of the engine or next to the fan. i dont know so i cant adjust them to get the car working . :( :cry:


*Foot note reason doing this, no compression in cylinders 1 and 2 misfires and runs unevenly

Nunber 1 at the front ( nearest to the fan) number 8 at the back.

All i need to know is which valve is which E.G No8 at the back of the engine or next to the fan. i dont know so i cant adjust them to get the car working .
It makes no difference at all regarding which end to start the numbers(check the numbers if you don't believe me).
However, the normal way to number them on A-series is to start at the water pump end with #1.

Good luck with adjusting them, however I expect the next job will be to have the head off :(

ASAIK all engines start with No. 1 nearest the fan except Jaguar which has No. 1 furthest away from the fan.

Or Peugeot DV4/6 diesel engines where cylinder 1 is at the transmission end of the block.

all you need to remember is the rule of 9 any valve open say no 4 adjust 5 4+5 =9. But sounds more like head gasket to me.
