hi there. right, now i'm sure many of you remember the thread about wanting to convert my 'box back in july, and i'm even more sure you have seen my recent posts about wanting the back end of an 803 box. i did do the conversion back in july, but only to 950 box, works pretty well, and happy with selection etc, problem is, im going to be putting a 1275 in in january, and i don't want to keep the 950 then. i have a 1098 'box, but when i posted back in july, i heard that it is quite a bit harder to do the conversion to keep the long stick(hence why i only went to 950 before).
i hate to go back on myself and ask the same sort of questions, but i really do need info on conversion for a 1098 box to long stick.
please help me!!

err think they are failry similar? can you not simply swap the top remote part to keep the stick you have?

sure someone more mechanical will come along with a better suggestion soon

well you see, it would seem that way, but according to my thread a few months ago, it is not so simple to convert the 1098 box to long stick...odd...

I would try taking the 'remote' off a 1098 - and then see if the long stick cannot somehow be fitted in place of the remote. I know others have suggested changing the whole tail-end of the gearbox over - and this is eemingly ok on a 948 but not so on a 1098. So - remove the remote and see what you get.

I think the left-right stick action would be reversed if you managed to do that.

The bottom of the stick operates a shaft in the remote control unit. This reverses the action of the stick:

Then the bottom end of the remote control unit shaft operates a second shaft in the tail casting, the bottom of which operates the actual gate. This reverses the action a second time so the bottom of the second shaft moves in the same direction as the bottom of the stick:

I think the early cranked stick must have operated the gate directly.

Just think of how much fun you will have watching people trying to drive it though :o

If it works, go for it, you will learn the shifting very quickly

The more you hate them, the more you love them!

Its strange isn't it.

that is so true. everytime i get in a "modern" car with plastic dash and legroom, i just feel like its not quite right! gotta love the mog(even when they look pants but still cost a fortune...yep thats mine!!)

What is it that stops you putting the 803 tail casting on the back of a 1098 box? Is the output shaft a larger diameter or something? Have you had any luck sourcing a spare 803 tail casting and a 1098 box yet?

I like the way you become 'one with the machine'. I know this sounds corny like i'm some kind of weirdo but its true!

Mine's felt a bit 'off' over the past few days and has had a slight rattle. A quick rummage under the bonnet revealed that one of my dampers was wobbly! (yes, I thought it was odd too) I tightened up the four bolts and voila - back to normal. :D

I don't think modern cars give the same kind of feedback.

Interesting Alex - I hadn't thought of that - would indeed help to make the car thief-proof!
