is the 1275 speedo the same as 1098

Having just swapped my moggy's 1098 engine and gearbox for the Mg Midget 1275 engine and gearbox, I'm now finding the speedo isn't working. Is the 1098 speedo cable different from the 1275 ?

Indeed. The MG box has beefier internals, but the same casing and AFAIK exactly the same drive mechanism (though possibly the wrong drive ratio depending on tyres/ final drive etc).

The drive is a pair of skew gears, the one connected to the speedo head is either bronze or plastic (was it one then the other?) and meshes with a steel gear on the end of the mainshaft. They are identical for all 948, 1098 and 1275 in-line units. All the calibration is done within the speedo head itself.

The plastic/bronze gear can strip, but is easily removed once the retaining plate has been taken off. If it, or the square socket on the end for the speedo cable is damaged, you could use the one from your 1098 box.

The later 1275 boxes had a built-in reverse light, has yours?
