Indicators just packed up

I noticed the left turn wasn't working - if I pushed the stalk it would work. Then it stopped working altogether. The right one was working ok. When I was messing with the indicator stalk the right one stopped working too. I took the assembly apart and the spring that holds the small brass bit against the contacts was loose. I fixed this and mechanically it all works ok now but the indicators still don't work. I measured 12v on the central terminal and the horn works fine.

Could the flasher relay have gone? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Jon

alot of the time it's dirty contacts on the stalk
usually as u said earlier it's just one side.

i think its a brass conastct and they get dirty over the years spray it with a cleaning spray and get a toothbrush on it.

i wouldn't say it was flasher unit because of what you've described

either that or you didn't put it back tog properly very fiddly little thing

Check it out by removing the flasher unit - and just join the two wires. Should now work (but obviously no flash!) proving contacts/bulbs etc are ok. Once you get that sorted - put the flasher back in circuit.

Thanks for the replies.

Touching the wires caused the fuse to blow. I wired in an old indicator switch assembly I still have and by touching the wires I could get the left and right indicators and warning lamps to light. I don't want to fit this one because it is for a mini and the spring mechanism for holding the indicator stalk down when signalling right is broken.

The faulty one is newish (< 1 year old) and seems to be working fine mechanically. I can't see why it would be shorting. Is there any way I can test it rather than spend £50 on a new one?

Just need to examine it v closely - and check for shorting with a meter rather than by blowing fuses. It's likely something to do with the horn wiring and contact ring.

There was definitely a problem with the brass piece that makes the contacts - it was not seated correctly in the plastic holder. I have fixed that and checking it out with a meter it seems ok - I get a circuit between the green/brown and green/red & green/white wires when I move the indicator stalk as you would expect.

There is a permanent circuit (in all three indicator positions) between the black wire and the light green wire that goes to the warning bulb on the end of the indicator stalk - is this correct?

Yes the black wire is the ground for the flashing tip. It should go back to the flasher to enable the green warning light to flash.

Thanks for your help - the indicators are now working again.

Once the switch was repaired I had to replace the flasher and everything was fine. Presumably the fault on the switch damaged the flasher before blowing the fuse.
