tyre pressures

according to the book the traveller should run 24 at the frount 26 rear,i have standuard wheels and radial tyres i am running at 26 psi does anyone have any advice.

Before I changed to whacking great 185 tyres with alloy wheels, I used to run 24 PSI all round on my traveller (never carried any rear loads) and tyre wear was even across the tread. I ran Firestone F560's and Kumho Tyres, and was getting about 20,000 miles out of them. I never go down to 1.6mm with tyres, I change tyres when they get down to 3mm. Several groups are pushing for 3mm to be the tyre wear limit for the MOT

I can't explain why, but
the tyres I've got on Fenchurch seem to require higher than normal pressure to stop them bulging out at the bottom. Ray accused me of having flat tyres but they were 28 all round at the time. After a bit of experimentation, they seem happiest with 30 on the front and 32 on the back.

Crikey, i would have thought at that pressure that the centres of the treads wore more quickly than the edges. Have you still got your own teeth?

Yes - 30 psi all round - bit more in the back if carrying a load. Anything less and it will be squelching all over the road.

Radial ply tyres should bulge out at the bottom, certainly at the aspect ratio fitted to the Minor. if you have them hard enough to remove the bulge then you have decreased their ability to flex at the sidewalls much more than the cross plies which is why they hold the road better.

They now look like any other radial tyres at the correct pressure. At 28 they bulged out a lot more (enough so that Ray said they looked flat). They seemed to be wearing quicker on the outside of the tread but it's a bit hard to tell. I've yet to experience any problems with loss of traction on tarmac.

If they are wearing more quickly on both innner and outer edges on each tyre then that would suggest under inflation which doesn't seem logical at your pressures.

in the late minor handbook it reccomends for radial 145 x 14(which i have) 24 for the fronts,and 26 for the back,ive been using it and it seems the best all round solution,i had a dodgy pressure guage which ended up giving me an actual 30 psi in the back!which i can confirm is not good if you want to keep your teeth intact!
