Can someone advise on correct tension please?
Should it be very tight, tight, or with just a little play in it?

Thanks.

Lo, with the car on level ground all slack
in the cable should be taken up but not to the extent of starting to try to pull the
engine backwards.

You will appreciate that its'main function is to
stop the fan from hitting the radiator so
there is quite a bit of leeway in the adjustment really. You may tend to think that it is not so important but, when i left it off of an early MG the car would jump out
of gear when I braked suddenly!![ This Message was edited by: Willie on 01-04-2002 22:40 ]

Hi
I agree with above. May I add because of the design of the Mountings. High and "V" shape, and the clutch operation is by manual means. This steady stops the engine going forward when operating the clutch.
A mod was to put a metal plate with hard rubber in front of the mounting. A method adopted by many manf.
The cable- tighten till just tight , then slack off 1/2 turn.......Ivor

Juddering in reverse can also be put down to incorrect cable tension, ie: too slack.
