Gearbox identification

I have just been given a gearbox along with some other stuff but am usure whether it is for a 948 or 1098. It looks like mine (1098) but is smooth on the outside.
(If it's a 948 I don't need it and will give it away).

I *think* the smoothness means it's a 948

Yes - fraid so - smooth = 948 if it has a remote extension, and if not then it's for an 803 !

Next question
:I have acquired a new complete back axle, also 948 as the diff marking is 9/41. If i fitted this to my 1098 with 1098 gearbox, approximately what penalty would I pay as regards top speed? I tow a trailer quite a lot an I thought it might be a better idea to have more torque at lower revs. I also have 155 tyres and i have heard it said that they can up your speed as well.

The 4.55-1 diff will give you effortless acceleration which would, in my opinion, help your towing considerably, obviously at the expense of higher revs at cruising speeds. The difference in revolutions per mile with 145X14 and 155X14 tyres is 19 revs only!

every little helps I suppose..
Given that the top speed in the book (haynes) is 78, I would be quite happy with 70. I could work it out but am unsure of the top end engine rpm. In 4th the drive is straight through isn't it?
