I was wondering if after making up a base plate fitting a K&N cone air filter that came off my Fiat would be OK - will fit a new paper one for now as it's DH who wants to fit he K&N

will be fine as long as the seal is good between the filter and the carb inlet - be noisier too but sound like your going faster :-)

But won't actually make the car go any faster. Don't bother with K & N for now - it may be part of an upgrade later, meantime I suggest just concentrate on getting the car to be the best it can as it is!

They are supposed to give you an extra 4% or something in BHP - but your right wont make you go faster just get you to your top speed slightly quicker.
Reckon if you do a K&N + good leads, coil & plugs youd see a 10% more with a big bore exhaust increase on bhp maybe a little more, and suppose youd notice that.
Trouble is your into a set of lowering springs and youd have to wear a baseball hat the wrong way round territory :-)
Oh not to mention a petrol genny in the back to power the ICE :-)

david vizard does a good comparison of air filter types in the yellow book. i agree that a K&N is of no real use until you have other engine parts tuned/upgraded also. I stuck a piece of foam rubber in mine as it was much too loud!! just didnt sound right for a minor... If you buy the metro filter setup, and fit a K&N filter in that, then you get good performance but without so much increased noise.

well thats why the chargers not working properly - get rid of the foam and the old sock youve probably stuffed in there too :-)

ah, apologies for the confusion, this was with the tuned 1098 engine I was running a while ago. I removed it before fitting the air filter to the supercharger!! which is actually quiter running than the 1098... I think due to the supercharger blocking off induction noise from the engine.

Only asked about the air filter as it's now sat in the shed (see I'm getting into minor mode already!)

If my other half has his way I'll need one. He used to own a Landrover and had a thing about fitting spotlights and lots of other electrical bits to any vehicle.
Perhaps I could zip tie his genny to a boot rack ??

i would tell him to leave your car alone and if he wants to fit a load of tat to get one himself! there is nothing wrong with the standard Minor Filter,if it was meant to have a different one it would have been designed with one.

Well, there are some things wrong with it, but pointless to change it without changing other things too :D

a "production" engine is full of engineering compromises just like a tuned engine is. A tuned engine is usually biased more towards power than economy and reliability. The standard air filter is sized for the amount of breathing that the production engine will breathe, so will only start restricting the engine once the engine is breathing more. Hope that makes sense.

It does indeed, but it doesn't alter what I said :D

true, its like putting halogen lights on with a dynamo.

That's ok - a dynamo can easily cope with halogen headlights - they don't use any more electricity (in fact v slightly less!) - they are just much more efficient at turning the electricity into visible light!
