REBORE & CRANK GRIND RECOMMENDATION AS TO WHERE?

Hi Folks,

After 105,000 miles a few knocking sounds can be heard when hot and I know from the last time I measured the bore at 78,000the old girl was going to need an engine rebuild sometime and I'm surprsed it has lasted so long.

So can anyone recommend a place to get a rebore and crank regrind done with supply of pistons and bearings. Must be in the South and preferably not too far from Reading. (Say 60miles)

I did toy with the idea of just picking up another engine from ebay and hoping for the best. Then I remembered that in the 60s and 70s the A class BMC engine often didn't get past 50k miles!! Plus if I rebuild it myself I will know it has been built correctly.

Thanks,

Mike

Try phoning Tom Airey for his recommendation.
He has a longtime connection with Mini racing.

Search your local yellow pages (or yell.co.uk) and look under engine reconditioners - or even cylinder boring etc. Note it is going to be expensive - around £50 for crank grind + £40 for new bearings, and £50 again for boring and around £80 for new pistons. You MUST fit a new oil pump and gaskets and new timing chain (and maybe sprockets) - will add another £50 or so. If it's a 948 engine then I suggest it's not worth it - and a decent secondhand 1098 engine will be so much better.
