New Alloys What Do You Think

Got a good deal on some alloys, so what do you folks think
(Can of worms opening now)
Some techy stuff. Old wheels offset was 35mm, new Alloys are 35mm offset. Old wheel and tyre weight 11.5Kg/Wheel New Wheel and Tyre weight 14.5 Kg (5.7 Lbs weight increase on each hub)
Old tyres 145 R14 New Tyres 185/60 R14 ( almost exact rolling circumference)
Have driven on these new rims in dry and wet, and handling is way way better, as is stopping distance.

Interesting, my only gripe would be that the silver colour doesn't match all that lovely shiny chrome close by. But to have a better stopping distance would be good - what brakes are you on, drum or disc conversion?

Awesome looking Trav !
the wheels suit it perfectly - wonder if they were chrome or the body colour they would look even better?
Keep thinking about making wooden wheels for mine

Running Modified Marina Hubs with 4" PCD, Marina Solid Rotors, and Ford Escort Mk3 Calipers (Fitted for previous owner by Mid Sussex Minors)
I'd prefer the Ford kit with the rotors mounted to the outside of the Hub, as any time I need to skim or replace the discs, I need to take the Hub off, as the rotors are bolted onto the rear of the hub. Still at least it makes me check and re-grease the wheel bearings
I did try chromed alloys, but believe me, it looked cac! It just got too 'In Yer Face'. Some people would have liked them, but I was nearly sick

Ta for that. Was pretty tidy when I bought it 5 years ago. Celly paint is 10 years old now and a little tired looking in places, but from 10 feet + it's ok.
As for wooden wheels, well, I have thought about making this a total 'Woody' at the back except for the rear wings and roof obviously. I laid a couple of Maple panels into the back door panels, and it looked really nice, like a shed with wheels

You are only the third person to spot that number plate magic
First time I heard about was at my first show in Peebles. Nice chap walks up to me, looks at the plate, and says "You jammy £$£$%^%"

Trust me thats not tired looking

Have pondered the same - even got to thinking about the rear wheel arches in laminated strips of the profile at say 1/4" thick - but would probably be overkill as in the coloured arches would make a nice contrast.
Might experiment with that when i build a trav trailer though

The wheels look the biz. By the way, where did you get the door mirrors?

MG Stand at Ingilston Motor show in 2004. Previous owner had fitted black PLASTIC door mirrors, and by the looks of them, probably for a transit van. I think the current mirrors are an aftermarket option for the MGBGT

I agree with the majority the wheels look good. I have them on my convertible and keep getting told I should take them off because it an original convertible so I should keep it all original. Nevertheless, I like them:lol:

Its not exactly hard to change the wheels to standard now is it ;)

No its not swapping wheels its harder trying to find room in the garage or shed to store them and numerous other spares

I didnt mean it like that! I meant why do people complain about non standard wheels!

Ah, but when asked "What do you think", I will express my opinion, although I do try and do it tactfully, as I said on another thread, it's all about personal taste, isn't it? After all, if it's what you want, and you're happy with it, that's all that should matter.

I kind of thought this topic would get a mixed response
Well to be honest, from an original look point of view, I think my old standard wheels looked nice. However, every tyre fitter would comment on the number of balance weights needed, and those 3.5J standard wheels go out of true when you hit a half decent pot hole.
Also most of the big tyre manufacturers stopped making 145R14's last year.
Looks aside, the 185/60 R14's transform the handling and ride. I mean the little Moggy just digs her heels in on every bend. The steering is lighter! The back end is still a bit lively in the wet, but it doesn't kick out as quick, and is easier to haul back in.
The speedo error is only 1.7% as the rolling circumference is almost spot on. The alloys take a bit longer to wash, oh dear

Looks great to me and I think it will handle better---now if I can find a set of wheels for my old girl--it's her birthday coming up soon and it would be a right treat for her!!
