Brake pedal return spring

Post by leyther8008 »

Help folks, when I took the cover plate that covers the master cylinder off I found a broken spring in the chassis leg, now its obviously the 'brake pedal return spring' but none of the manuals I have give any hint as to where it goes from and too, obviously somewhere on the brake pedal to somewhere on the master cylinder? couldnt spot anywhere obvious, mind you the batteries in my torch where on their last legs.
Any remotely followable description would be of great help.

There should be a little bracket in the chassis leg for it to hook to - and a hole in the pedal. Has the spring worn through at the bent end ? Or - has the bracket rusted out in the chassis leg!? There was a thread a wee while back about all this - with hints how to reconnect the spring - have a search for it.

Happened to me recently :(

First up get a new one.
it goes from the bottom of the brake pedal forwards, in the box section should be a tab/lug about 4 or five inches fwd on the left hand side.
if youve got lots of rust flake in there then you may have to dig for it - and whilst there vacuum out any crud and spray it up with something.

Fitting is a pest - there are some good methods mentioned on here like with wire to pull the spring.
Basically locate the fwd end in the tab in the box, use some wire (i used an old wiper arm spring as it has a hook end) then use pliers to pull the new spring backwards to locate in the heel of the brake pedal.

Not sure migth have a couple of pics from when i did mine, will have a look shortly.

Many thanks for the above, the end has the vestiges of a hook left on it but its as thin as Kate Moss looks like its just succumed to old age.
I will get a new one next week, the brakes seem to be working fine (Well as bad as usual hence the investigations) by the way!
