Engine replacement

Post by jackkelleher »

I am trying to get my engine into the gearbox. There is a gap of about one and a half times the width of the locating pin that will not close, no matter how the engine is manipulated, hammered and pushed. Any joy? What could be stopping it from going that last centimetre and a half? Is it not engaging with the spline? If so, how does one ensure that it does engage?
Urgent... I have very little time and am trying to get this finished. I would be grateful indeed for fast replies... :(
Is rust infectious? My hands are turning red...

I had exactly the same problem. To be honest I don't know how it went home in the end as the mechanic down the road got it there but he suggested that it was just a case of getting it exactly level with the box - not so easy to establish when you are looking down on it. Try assisting with a jack below the engine or box.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

1: Make sure there is only a locating pin in either the gearbox or the engine flange. It's not unknown for replacements to have a pin fitted and the two pins clash.

2: Wrong spigot bush diameter in flywheel

3: Clutch Plate not centred

sometimes if you get a long bar and exert pressure on the engine towards the gear box and at the same time get someone to turn the engine over via the starting handle it's enough to let the splines engage in the clutch plate and the engine to slot into place,May be the solution try it nothing to loose good luck

Turning the engine is the way - but the clutch plate must be centred first or it will not go in - and it's possible to do some damage if you lever it - it should just slide on as you rotate the engine.
