hi all
i posted a thread the other day having problems on missfire,i managed to trace it to a sticky valve,i removed the head and found it was well worn out,so i found a replacement engine, ive removed my old engine tonite after work, but i had abit of a fight with it,i was using a crane and a 2 post ramp, the sump was touching the front crossmember when i pulled it forward, and i didnt quiet get enough clearance at the bell housing,i then tilted the engine at a angle to try and over come the problem, and i went and caught the imput shaft on the pressure plate, the thrust ring poped off,but it looks like somethings adrift in the pressure plate now its lets say twisted, :( the rads out and everything,is there an easier way?what am i doing wrong?i dont wanna mangle up my newly painted engine tommorow. :P

Sounds like you removed the engine without the gearbox?
Way too much work. You need to remove the front bumper/valance, two hockey sticks, a few bolts and the entire front of the car comes off complete with the radiator. Disconnect the engine ancillaries, four gearbox cross member bolts and lift the engine/gearbox out as one.

FWIW, the BMC workshop manual, shows engine only removal, by turning the engine sideways before lifting out.

Definitely remove the entire front. Much easier and when it has lifted clear it is sometimes easier to roll the car away from the engine and gearbox, then just lower the unit to the floor, a trolley or bench

I took the entire front off my car, took about 20 minutes (even with the fiddly damn hockey sticks). Then engine and gearbox out in one, its much easier, and makes splitting the gearbox from the engine a lot easier too!

With care - and the gearbox well jacked up so it doesn't drop - the engine can easily be taken out with the front still in place - make life a wee bit easier by taking the fan + pulley off - and sling it at a slight angle so it slides down onto the shaft before the sump touches the X member. If your front hasn't been off for ages - it make take a while to get all the bolts - and the studs for the hockey sticks may very well snap meaning more expense for new sticks!!

well i fitted my replacement engine today,i reoved the box and stuck it all in together with another pressure plate :-? its a sweet engine and no smoke!!!!one thing i will say its abit flat,i set the timming up at 3 deg as per the book, fitted new points plugs coil everything to be honest,i havent touched the carb yet although i think its running a tad rich.i was thinking maybe the vacume advance is up the greek, ill try and suck on it and see what happens.but i well pleased and shes all painted up looking great.thanks for the help, just need help now getting her pulling abit better!! :P

Check the valve gaps are correct - and maybe get a compression test to check the general condition of the engine. Vacuum advance is v important too. What capacity is the engine - and what was the old one ? Just in case old was 1098 and this is only 948!!

there were both 1098,ive checked the vacume advance and it seems to be ok.am i right in thinking that you screw the adjuster mixture nut in to weaken the mixture??or unwind,i done the valve clearences before i fitted the engine so there ok,not done a compression check maybe i should,no smoke though the engine hasnt been used for about 2 years, the car i took it out of was sat in a garage.just wondering with abit of use it might sort itself out abit!!i hope!!

Yes, raising the jet weakens the mixture.
