Not sure whether this is mechanical or electrical, but people will see it either way so it doesn't really matter!
I need to remove the motor from the wiper unit without removing said unit from the car. How is this done? I'm assuming it's actually possible.

not having done it in the car, but I don't see any reason why not? Just unscrew the two (long) screws that hold the motor to the gearbox, then pull the body out keeping the end cap close to the body, else you may drop the brushes and springs. The rotor may remain in position and can be pulled out afterwards. Just watch the brush\spring assembly as it has a few small parts which are easily lost.
However as it is relatively easy to remove the whole unit I suggest that it is easier to work on it on a workbench or the like.

Yes, I did this recently inorder to fit new brushes. (1957 car)
Obviously disconnect one side of the battery and place newspaper etc on the engine bay floor to catch any bits which you drop! As advised just
remove the two long screws and it more or less collapses. The brushes are available new and merely sit in their housings so they fall out easily too hence the newspaper. I didn't bother to replace the single brush spring which came with the brushes.

But it's easy to take it off the car - and then you can clean/check it all properly. And yes DO disconnect the battery because there is a feed to the motor all the time (through ignition obviously) to power the self park mech. Oh - and mark the self park position carefully on the cover and body before taking to bits!

Well, there's currently no engine or battery in the car, so that was ok! I was actually just cleaning the unit, and I cleaned the rest of it recently, but I forgot the actual motor! So I've just done that, following your instructions- thank you, it went perfectly!
