What's the best way to do it? They don't seem as if the "grip and twist" technique with a pair of pliars would really be much good.

Use 2 nuts, lock one against the other and undo using the lower one. Well, it works for me

Yes 2 nuts. Use the longest you can find and use both spanners when undoing.

One of the small camming devices that slip over the stub works really well though you will probably damage the stub if its really tight or shear it off.

A bit of heat always helps if they are really stuck.

Can I ask a stupid question, that probably means I've been doing the whole thing wrongly? How does one remove the second nut when finished? I have spares anyway, but it's always nice to have a few nuts lying around. I am frequently in need!

The idea is to grip the stud by tightening the nuts against each other. To remove them again, use one spanner to hold the bottom nut while you use another spanner to slacken the top nut, then they should both just unscrew by hand.

Ah.. I've had the lower one tightened right up against the end of the thread, so it's been refusing to come off! I see my error.
