Some people are just too lazy to wash the car properly
Wonder if they'll give it a coat of polish now

Alex if this charlie had parked in first gear he would still have rolled forward into the briny, wouldn't he?

How so? Leaving it in gear acts as a sort of transmission brake if the handbrake fails.

aiii, indeed, but wouldn't reverse have helped more, if parked nose towards the edge of something?

it wouldn't have made much difference - 1st or reverse will both stop a car rolling on a fairly level surface - on a steep hill they could still roll but not fast enough to get anywhere quickly.
Therefore when parking on a steep hill it's best to angle to front whels so that if the car does roll it won't go far!

I was wondering about that, too; I drove by this place the other day, and had a look; it's not apparent from the photo, but there's quite a steep slope down from the road to the harbourside...
