Our 65 convertible in OEW was resprayed 3-4 years ago and is still very good except for a split on the bonnet in an awkward place. The split is about 6" long and in the concave part of the bonnet. The paint is curling up slightly either side of the split and there is is separation for about 1/2" back from the split on both sides.

Not sure how to tackle it and would appreciate some advice. I guess I have to carefully remove the damaged area, level the surface and respray. What's the best filler? The stuff I have although new is rubbery and doesn't leave a good finish. I have spray paint matched by Morrelli.

the filler i would use is celly putty to fill in the damaged area it worked on the traveller

Remove all loose paint. Feather edge the area effected,plus about a 6" surrounding area with 1200 wet paper or scotch brite.
Use Acid 8 etch primer from a can to cover just the bare metal, but only a very fine coat, do not wet up. Let this dry thoroughly, then use Top Stop a vey fine stopper. Dry flat with 120 - 240 paper, then prime in your chosen paint celly or 2K followed by wet flatting with 800 then spray your top coat, allow plenty of drying time between coats. Finish with wet flatting 2000 and cut and polish.

Aye - it really shouldn't need any 'filler' - just the 'stopper' as j says above - to level up the surfaces before final painting. Unless of course the bonnet actually has a dent in it ?

hi john, don't forget to treat the underside of that area of your bonnet too, in case rust gets a hold

Get the stopper that dries quickly- best from a motor factors. The orange "1k" stuff is very good I've used, no sinkage which can be a problem with old tins of celly stopper.
