bizzare motorbike engine

saw this strange contraption in a museum in france while on holiday - yup the engine is located inside the front wheel! the "crank" does not rotate, the rest of the engine turns round it, turning the front wheel.

I bet the people who used the same principle on vehicle electric motors thought they were being very novel!

Ah,
First World War aero technology - rotary engines!
The propeller is attached to the cylinders, the crankshaft fixed to the airframe.
IIRC made by Gnome - a French company!

If you look carefully the carb supplies the engine with charge through the middle of the wheel bearing... must get air leaks alot!! also I wonder if it has a clutch? otherwise it would stall everytime you want to stop...
