guys, my mate has just bought a traveller which is making a leetle squeaking noise.

with the bonnet up it sounds like it's coming from the os of the engine

it's intermittent (aren't they all )

it sounds as though it's an external squeak rather than something inside either the engine or one of the components

sounds further back than the water pump/fanbelt

dynamo fitted - she has just lubricated it to be sure but no improvement as yet - also she has tightened up the fanbelt

Any ideas?

I had a noise on my saloon - turned out to be the rear / upper engine steady that is attached to battery tray was loose and was squeaking as the bracket moved (metal to metal).
Took ages to tack it down.
Isn't probably the same in this case but still worth a quick check ?

paul - have checked this, the rubbers are a bit perished but the bar is dead solid Will check it again though now you have said that

j - yes it was squeaking before the fan belt was tightened, and tbh the belt was tight enough probably - my mate was just seeing if she could adjust it a bit more accurately

To work out where the noise is coming from Use a very big screwdriver preferable 15 to 18 inches long put your ear to the handle and touch the pointed end on different points as you work your way around the engine. Start with the rocker cover bolts learn that noise, then the cylinder head bolts, the water pump and perhaps the biggest cause of "engine" noise the dynamo so listen to each end of it.

The distributor has my favourite sound like a fast beating clock.

As you can tell I really enjoy the experience.

Just be careful near the fan belt and blades and make sure you don't have any loose clothing or hair that might get caught.

I have got a proper stethoscope, but I prefer the screwdriver. I remember my father listening to the rails at a level crossing to see if a train was coming I suppose that’s where I got it from! .

Yep, could well be the dizzy. I never knew they could squeak until I got the Midget, and after replacing everythnig that was rattling I could hear a squeak. Checked the fanbelt, water pump was replaced, alternator was changed... Then I oiled the dizzy whilst changing the vacuum advance on it, and lo - No more squeak!

Try with the fan belt removed - just to eliminate the pump and generator - and the belt itself of course. Could well be dizzy - if it varies with engine revs - oil it and see !

still squeaking a bit, but now really only on acceleration, esp uphill - seems like a definite fan belt slip (i with my devious mind suspect that perhaps there's something else too, but this is hotly disputed)

will try with fan belt removed, thanks for the suggestion bmcE

Check the part number on the fanbelt. I it ends in an 'A' it's the wrong belt type for dynamo. The 'A' is for alternator mod and the pulley depth of the belt could be wrong.

New one on me ! The other two pulleys will still have the same old V groove. A is simply the section of the belt - (A,B,C etc) for industrial use - but car V belts are often their own section design. I have used A section belts on Minis and Minors - but they do sit quite low in the grooves. Work ok!

Just a thought I had a whistle I thought was the water pump. Eventually traced it to a loose carburetor bolt and an air leak. That made a sort of squeaking noise under load.
