I drove my saloon to a show yesterday for the first time in years in the rain. But the end result was that I noticed a little bit of water sitting on and in the inside windscreen rubber on the drivers side.

I said to another minor owner at the show and he said that my rubbers wern't perished but that what I had to do was to remove the aluminum surround carefully and inject mastic under the rubber on both sides all the way around.

Is this the way to fix this problem ?

I would use the proper windscreen sealant rather than "mastic" as it remains flexible and is designed for the job. Available from the usual places- your local partco/ brown bros/motor factors should also sell it.

He also said that I had to be really really really careful in removing and refitting the aluminum strip as if it bends, its scrap. Has anyone else done this king of job before that can offer advice or is this a specialist thing ?

There are two types of surrounds, the plastic insert type and the stainless steal edged type. Both are a bit tricky to re insert but I dont think you need to remove it to inject some w/s sealer.

I have the stainless steel type and I injected the sealer when all was ready in place, including surround.

Dont forget to put some sealer in between the rubber and glass especially at the bottom of the w/s!!
