halfshaft shortening

Hi folks,
Anyone any ideas where I can get a pair of halfshafts shortened. I assume the technique is to extend the splines, and then cut the end off... Obviously using machining kit which I dont have.

We have a local firm who will do that.
Their main business is advertised as "gear cutters" so that is what to look for in the Yellow Pages for your area.

I have to ask - WHY ? And A35 half shafts are similar but shorter anyway.

Midget are same length as A35 / A40 MKI but stronger.
I've got a pair of Midget "in stock" if you want me to take any measurements.

Thanks, will try looking up gear cutters. The axle casing I'm prepared to do myself, but I dont have the kit to mill out the splines. I think a midget axle is too narrow for this job, but its the plan B if the machining dosn't work out. Think I need about 2" off each shaft.

Sounds about right for an A35/ Midget axle then - a whole lot easier and less expensive!

That would be neat, though I understood those were even narrower. Will certainly look into this first though. If Paul, yours are handy to run a tape over that would be appreciated. If not I know of an A30 near here that I can crawl under and measure when its a nice dry day!

The other option to re splining is to bore out the flange and slide this down the shaft. Depending on surface area you can shrink, silver solder or Loctite 638.
In theory the 638 Loctite will be strong enough but I wasnt brave enough to use it on my shafts!

Hi,
John, do you know if it's possible (within reason) to narrow a Celica axle?
I'm trying to fit wide wheels under the back of a standard-bodied ( albeit V8 ) Pick-up!
Have you ever done it on one of your cars??

Martin,
We never narrowed a Celica axle. However there are 3 different widths of Celica. The Mk2 and Mk3 and both strong and the Mk2 is narrower. The GT also has fatter half shafts.
