I have never sprayed bodywork properly before. The existing paint is good with the exception of a large number of 'wormtrail' imperfections which have sanded back to primer. Can someone please advise me how I should prep the existing paint to key the new in?

use scotch pads, similar to scouring pad you'd use in the kitchen
or if you haven't any of that a VERY fine sandpaper like 2000 grit

just give it all a good rub over and that will remove the shine and give it a good key for the new paint to adhere to.

make sure you don't mix and match paint tho as it will react

prime the areas you have sanded back to build up the surface. Prime a wide area around each and guide coat when dry, then flat back with 800 wet'n dry in small circular motions. this will tell you that you have a level surface rather than a depression where you have flatted through. I presume the car is celly, if so, just wet flat back all areas to be painted with 800 wet'n dry again in circular motion, put a bit of fairy liquid or soap in the water, when it starts to froth you know the paper is cutting. You need to remove all shiny paint and get as flat a surface as possible. When happy with the car in primer, re mask the car and panel wipe all surfaces,when this is dry, then wipe over with a tack rag, prior to painting, Mix your top coat and apply a thin almost dry layer of paint and leave atleast 20 mins to flash off. then apply wet coats, but no more than 3 otherwise the underlying paint may re activate and cause problems. Always allow at least 20 mins between coats. Thin down the last coat with more thinners to allow it to flow out easier.
