Reserve fuel capacity

How far can you go after the fuel gauge reaches empty? I just did about ten miles on the motorway at 65MPH before reaching a petrol station and putting 26.2 litres (5.8 gallons) in the tank. If it's a 6.5 gallon tank then in theory I had 0.7 gallons left, which should be enough for quite a few miles.

every Minor I had was different. One managed 60 miles from when the guage reached empty - another ran out after 17 miles!

I carry a gallon of petrol in the car. then I run the car till it runs out of fuel. Note where the gauge is as it is now empty, put the gallon in and drive away knowing exactly where the gauge is when empty and also where it is with a gallon in the tank.

But if you drive till the car runs out you put yourself at risk of slowing down when in a high speed situation, not something I'd like to do

I ran out the other day on a dual carriageway when I would say the guage was on 'almost empty'. Won't be trying it again anytime soon, although I now keep a little extra in the back just in case. 8) TH

I've had the needle on the 'E' once but it must have been running on vapour.
