is there a way to lock the drivers side door from the inside, similar to the passeger side, the car is for my daughter and I am looking for extra security while she is driving on her own.
also how do you get the pasenger door lock assembly off, I have removed the circlip but can't get the arm off to allow the lever to clear the hole in the door frame.

You need to remove the door top because the vertical channel the window slides in gets in the way. Even then it takes a fair bit of wiggling to get it out.

I have figured out how to solve this, so it may serve to help others.
having stripped the doors down for refurbishment, I compared both locks, I removed the hockey stick from the passenger side lock and it fits straight into the drivers side, and works just fine, there is even a hole ready for it in the door.
£2 for another hockey stick job done.
beware there is a small spring loaded pin on the hockey stick that needs pushing in to allow it to be removed.

The little lever that one flicks to lock the door from the insdie is HANDED. They are categorically different for the left and right hand doors. However, if you buy the correct right hand lever from well known parts suppliers then it just pops in (retained by a spring loaded plunger). If the you fit the lever from the passenger door to the driver's door then it works backwards and is prone to breaking off as it gets caught by the door frame. The correct part is readily and cheaply available. Be warned, it makes it easier to lock the leys in the car, but apart from that is a greta idea.
