hi guys

ok it seems to me that the design of the front wings of Minors is a bit pants, as it allows the front wheel to kick up loads of mud etc and deposit it in the V-shaped gully at the back of the wheel arch. Leading to rust every time

Apart from using fibreglass wings (too late), mud flaps (in the pipeline) and lashings of Dynax S50......

There must be a solution! some sort of extra guard thing one can fit to block off that V-shaped gully at the back.

Anyone?

There are plastic wheel arch liners available for the Minors as per most modern cars but i don't know how much they cover. Front mud flaps are a bonus on our cars as they prevent the muck and spray being thrown back along the entire sill bottom area( that is why the jacking points rust so quickly).

One of my wings rotted where you mention so I cut it all out and repaired it with figreglass.
Before putting it back on the car I went around the joins and seams with seam sealer.
After this I brushed/poured lots of hammerite under body seal in there. I also took the other wing off, cleaned out the crud and painted this one with the same gloop.

I don't see any reason why you cant take them off, clean them up and make a fibreglass liner, directly fixed/glued to the wing.

mmmm they have been painted and sealed in situ so I need to have an after-market fix really! thanks very much anyway, dunketh!

cleaning it fairly regularly will help alot, if there is alot of mud built up there and then you drive through a puddle then park the car, moisture will be stuck against the wing for hours/days before it dries out. if there is no much there, then the water will run off the paint and the water will be gone much sooner, giving it less time to corrode the car.

I'm going to try and adapt someting like a plastic trailer mudguard.
It won't seal anything in nor will actually touch the body / wing other than "stand off" attachment points.
The idea is to reduce spray & muck thrown up yet still allow any that does get though to easilly drain.

Ok Wibble_Puppy do what i've done on my van. I 'inherited' a length of convayer belt, which I cut to go to up to about 3/4 of the hieght of the arch at the rear. This is screwed (was pop-riveted) on to the edge of the wing (fibreglass in this case) and to the inner part of the arch. Works really well, had them on for 7 years and they certainly stop the majority of the road crap going into the corner.

I'll be doing the same on all my minors when i get them on the road again!

I don't get Minor Monthly, poo.

Haven't tried but thought that something like a plastic bin or water butt from a diy store might yield some suitably curved bits of tough plastic.

As far as I recall, one of the traders was marketing a piece of stainless steel sheet and a sealant strip cut to shape to screw on to the inner part of the front wing. This would stop spry going into the crevice, but allow it to breathe and drain. MGBs have a very similar arrangement, though factory fitted of course. Think the trader might be Minor Developments, but not 100% sure.
