In the process of renovating the pass side swivel pin leg on my 53 splitty, I came across a second hand but quite good swivel pin leg from a morris 1000.

Now the latter stub axle seems wider and I thought I would exchange it with my original.

Any Idea on how this is done? Someone told me it is fitted by heating could someone pl post some details?

If you mean the stub axle - sticking out from the leg - then certainly it is very firmly fitted in there and I would not attempt to remove it! But if you must - it may be possible by heating the metal around the stub and then pressing it out - after removing the circlip which I think also retains the stub.

Just to be sure, is the swivel pin leg interchangeable for both morris 1000 and 803? Except for the axle of course

Maybe I need to rephrase, ESM state that the swivel pin legs exist as pre '50 and '50 onwards could someone please throw some light.....I cant see

Isnt that something to do with the first type of trunnions that were of a brass type or something if I remember correctly.

Series MM are different that is for sure.

I know the track rod ends changed in the late 50s, not 100% sure about the rest though

The original top 'eye' was designed for bronze bearings - but early cars also had different hubs with wheel bolts on 4.5" pcd, later cars wheel studs with 4" pcd - but did these early hubs sit on a different stub axle ? Sorry, I have no idea .

Well the stub axle I found on the Minor 1000 swivel pin leg is definitely wider then what I had originally. I shall check if the hub diameter is the same maybe I fit the minor 1000 bearings instead...

Just received from ESM, they said all swivel pins are the same except for 8cwt????

Sure that odd one isn't from a Marina ?

def one is not a minor leg, can tell by the position of the steering arm, one is in the top hole and one is in the bottom hole by the looks

Don't think there IS a top hole in the other (longer?) leg.

yes u r right there is not, maybe marina then,seems an odd one to have on a minor

We don't know it was ON a Minor - it was 'come across' - and assumed to be from a Minor! But it is an interesting point - can Marina units be fitted to Minors ? Would make the disc brake conversion a bit easier if they would fit.

Actually the one in the pic below was already fitted to my 803 and the other was definitely on a minor



Now I just discovered that these legs could be re threaded to an undersized thread, did anyone find any underthreaded trunions available?

yes it was fairly common in the 60`s to the 80`s to have the threads recut undersize, and you could get the undersize trunnion, they were painted red, i sold some on ebay a while back
the undersize trunnions are not available any more
i would get new legs and trunnions, if yours are gone

The situation got even more interesting!! I just found out that the swivel leg which was on my 803 is probably an original or at least it has the correct size of stub axle.

This is confirmed because the bearings match exactly with the new replacement wheel bearing kit from ESM SV 200

So - does it take a standard Minor 4" pcd hub ? Surely that's what matters ?
