'64 Traveller Winsdcreen rubber replacment

Post by adrian5750 »

HI All

Is this task (replacing the windscreen rubber) _really_ such a terrible diy job?

I'm in the process of sorting out the interior of my Traveller - and there's clearly been water getting in through the screen rubbers in the past - not surprising when you look at the cracking that's evident in the corners.

So - I know it looks like a tricky job - but how bad is it in practice?

Anybody done it - and lived to tell the tale ?

(I already know about the 'other' possibility - involving a brick and claiming on one's windscreen insurance.....)

Thanks
Adrian

yes it is a nightmare

i started doing mine at 5pm at finished just gone 10pm the night before the national (bad move :( )

it helps if you heat it up in a hot bath for a while and then use a hair drier to heat the bit you're working on.

getting the screen and rubber in is no prob the hard bit is the chrome strip which tightens it all up.

i even used the proper tool with still no joy.

Lucky for you I'll have to say the exact opposite!
I did mine yesterday, albeit in a later single-screen 1098 saloon.

The first difficult job is actually fitting the rubber seal around the glass. This was a 'struggle' but easy enough.
You then run some string around the inside of the rubber groove - like the manuals always say.

Then I lay the screen and rubber in the empty morris 'hole'. I got my wife to push gently on it from the outside and pulled the string.
The rubber was so flexible is simply pulled over the metal lip easy peasy. Only thing I did was wrap the string around a screwdriver as it was cutting into my fingers.
Once in the hole I used a flat screwdriver to gently push it roughly central by prying it between the window frame and the exposed rubber.

Its worth mentioning at this point that I bought the 'premium' screen rubber. This was so amazingly flexible the string didn't cut it and it pulled a silly amount without splitting. This was with it cold too - no pre-warming!

I forgot my grease so the only lubricant was a tiny spray of WD40 around the lip.

Anyway, it all went in in around 10 minutes. You need an assistant and you need them to push the glass but not too hard. If they push too hard you can't pull the string through - as its trapped by the rubber.

Right, now we come to the hardest part. In truth I probably took nearly 2 hours doing this!!!
I didn't have a proper fitting tool - the 'Unipart' dealers near me don't even list them in the catalogue!.

I used a flat screwdriver with its corners rounded off. (not rounded off for this job I might add - its just a knackered old one I use as a prybar  ).

You need to push one side of the chrome into the hole and then push down from above so the triangular bit at the back also goes into the hole. This leaves you with one lip outside the rubber. I simply pushed the screwdriver into the hole behind this lip and pried the rubber over it.
Working slowly and carefully you can do this without 'nicking' the rubber.
Be warned though, it takes fapping ages as you're only doing an area the size of the screwdriver head each time. Also corners are an absolute (bad word!!!) and no doubt odd parts will pop out while fiddling.

All things considered it was an easy job with a bit of frustrating fiddling.
Perhaps it was the high quality rubber that I used, perhaps it was simply good luck...
I did a mini one years ago and that simply refused to go in at all. But that was with an old brittle rubber and I was in a foul mood at the time  )
