I have just put a pancake style air filter on to the standard 1098 carb and the engine runs fine...on dry days. If there is even a hint of damp in the air the engine is lumpy and cuts out at low revs. I didn't have this problem with the standard air box on so whats changed. Any advice?

Put the standard filter & box back on !

So - lift the idle speed slightly - and tune in the ignition advance and the mixture with the new filter in place.
lumpy

I second that, put the original back, a pancake filter is not very efficient
airflow wise but has probably ruined your mixture too.

Sorry, but if it's weakened the mixture that means it's flowing more air and is more efficient. Of course it's possible that it's restricting the air more than the standard filter, not all after-market goodies actually improve on the originals (particularly heavy wire mesh filters)!
You'll miss the warm air intake in winter too when the carb ices up one cold & misty morning.

Not always the case as it may not be filtering the air enough to stop particles getting into the engine.

At idle speed ANY filter passes more than enough air - it makes no difference except at high airflow conditions - ie full throttle & high revs.
