Timing at 6 deg BTDC at 600 RPM. May then need to retard for unleaded. Then set idle high enough so the ignition light is not flickering on tick over.

Mine is idling at about 600-650 and sounds as ruff as a dawg!

I have set mine to idle at about 600 rpm, the red ignition light just glimmering enough to see in daylight. Sounds very smooth.

Aye - 500-600 should be fine once warm. Slow as possible really - to give engine braking where required. If it's rough - then first check the vacuum advance is working (most are not) - then adjust the ignition timing for smoothest idle - then adjust mixture for smoothest idle - back to timing - back to mixture etc.

Other causes of rough idle can be worn or dirty carb, burnt exhaust valve or blowing head gasket.
Take the carb apart and very carefully clean it, then re-assemble and set the mixture and idle.

Mine idles at around 900. If I set it at 600 it would probably die when I press the clutch in!

The BoL for the Midget says 550 for the 1098 and 700 for the 1275. 1098 Mini is 750.
I don't seem to have my Minor BoL to hand, but I reckon the Minor should be around the same as the Mini 1098 as the engines seem to be the same (other than the crank, sump and all that transverse gubbins).
