Cylinder head number - Remove the rocker cover and look behind the middle pair of valves (or in that general area) - You'll see a number. 12G202 is the normal one for a 1098 head.

The block might have a tag on the rear (where the manifolds go), or even have a number cast in (I'm sure I've seen an alloy tag on at least one 948). Also, there's an actual casting/ part number on the block, about half way up the manifold side of the block at the gearbox end.

You should really keep it ALL! But certainly - keep the head/rockers/rocker cover/timing cover/front plate/back plate/timing gears/camshaft and followers/oil pump/filter casing and pipe/relief valve/sump/ head studs etc. Someone on here will probably want the remaining block/crank/rods/pistons - as spares or as a rebuild carcase. they are getting rarer - don't through it away!

you know, it would be easier to hold on to the full engine block and all. :P

Save the engine! They're always useful! I'm sure there are many people who would be very grateful for one. Is it worth fitting one to a 948? I just acquired a '62 948cc two door, the car is falling to pieces (when it gets out here there might be a project topic on it, it will certainly be interesting!) but saveable and I love it (long story, got it as a birthday present, was forced to give it away when we left, now the friend has run out of time and returned it), and I could switch the engine, which incidentally has just been removed from the car, making a switch easier... I know I'd have to replace the gearbox too, I don't mind. The one I already have (picture on my signature) is registered to the DVLA as 948, but actually has a 1098, that's why I wondered... Is it worth it? If so, that engine of yours might be going places! (provided you let it, and I expect at a cost, but hey, nothing good is free!)
