Well, it's easy if you buy a kit,of which there are several on
the market. Mine involved a tiny bit of welding but has been
excellent.

Either use a kit, or if you do it yourself you require ones with the correct fittings each end and the correct open and closed length.

Dampers also have different rates so you require some from a similar vehicle ie one with an axle.

If you go the DIY route be prepared for some welding.

If you buy a kit bear the following in mind. The dampers job is to control the axle, to do this it must move because it works with oil passing through internal passages. Therefore choose a damper kit which means as much wheel movement as possible is translated to damper movement. In otherwords the best dampers are fitted upright as close to the wheel as possible.

The Morris Minor centre in Birmingham do a bolt on kit which uses your original top mounting and a different spring plate.

I understand they offer a large improvement on the original items, but it all depends on how good you actually want it.

I have used turrets welded through the floor and re-enforced with a piece of box section (in-between the turrets) which is also welded to the diff bump in the floor. But this route takes a fair bit of work and a lot of welding, but as John says, it is good because the shockers are vertical and as close to the wheels as possible.

I am very pleased with the results.

I'm not sure I would risk using second hand shocks off E-Bay - it might prove to be a false economy. I would think it best to purchase tried & tested new kit from Minor specialists. I would go with Cam's advice and buy from the MMC in Birmingham.

Chris is right. Don't assume that shocks from another vehicle made by the same manufacturer are in some way suitable. They may well have totally different mounting points, size and effectiveness. I have heard that shocks from a Peugeot 205 are suitable - but then you would have to know which 205; 1.1, diesel, or GTi. They are all different and matched to the springs they complement.
Trust the specialists. They too offer different options to suit your style of driving; oil, gas or adjustable.
