Moving Hub Bearings

Post by alanworland »

Just thought I would share my experience of rear hub bearings. I dismantled the hubs to replace the rear seals and found that the bearings had obviousley been moving in their housings. I decided that the gasket that was sandwiched in the flange had the centre section against he bearing outer, the bearing under a side/end load would not be supprted by the soft gasket and was consequentley allowed to move.
As the bearing sits proud of the housing by about .004 I have assembled without the gasket relying on the 'O' ring for sealing knowing that the bearing is positively clamped in position, in addition to this I have introduced another 1/4 csk opposite the existing one so when the wheel nuts are removed the assembly is still held together squarely.
I was going to put a couple of pics of this, but I don't know how to do it![/img]
