hi, can anyone tell me where the four connectors on the horn should be wired to,

Four?
I only have two. One permanent live and the return to earth via the horn button.

I am pretty much starting from scratch, (and without a clue) there is a horn
connected to the body via a single bolt and two connectors on either
side of the horn. There are two loose wires down in that area, they look like purple (or brown!) with a black stripe, there is a button in the centre of the steering wheel with a spring inside but no wiring. Can anybody fill in the blanks.

There should be a wire up the center of the column...

I think my horn wires are purple. and, yes, there should be one appearing under the horn button. If it has slipped down the steering column you will probably have the horn on permanantly when you connect it up! The top wire should go through a rubber spacer with a spring round it and is secured by a small circlip on top of a brass washer. This arrangement provides the contact that the horn button touches when you press it. A connection is then made to a slip ring with a wiper contact on the indicator arm and so to earth.

It really needs a set of photos, as this query has come up a couple of times, but I'm sorry I'm not going to take mine apart this week.

Anyone with a camera got one they can get to?

Need horn conections and several of the top end arrrangement including the slip ring.

This old photo is not a great photo. It is cold, wet and windy outside at the moment so not really photo weather for better ones.

The wires are purple from the fuse to the horn and purple/black to the horn push which provides the earth.

And when the purple black wire in the loom exits near the column, it goes into a brown (maybe with a trace but I can't remember) wire that goes from the purple/ black to the horn push gubbins in the column.

Confused the hell out of me first time I came across that, I saw a brown wire (unfused always live as I understand it) dangling off the column and couldn't find where the purple/ black horn wire connected - I was looking for, obviously, a purple/ black on the column harness!

The column harness on mine is "non standard". The wire from the purple/black to the slip ring is something that I think is just a handy bit available at the time. The wire inside the column is brown maybe with a trace, I can't remember.
40+ year old wiring looms are fun when lots of people have had their fun with them. A voltmeter and/or continuity tester is a useful tool. Mine has a buzzer on it so you can set it up at one end of the wire and then go to the other end to find out which it really is at that end.

Does anybody know if the pole that the wire passes through to lift it from the column to the horn is available anywhere? It'd be nice to use some of my columns which are missing it

Thanks everyone. I think i've got my head round what goes under the bonnet, but looking at the photo i must have some bits missing,
I have a large nut with a brown wire poking through, (sorry if that's too technical) and a loose spring - as well as the button.

I think I am missing -
washer
rubber spacer
circlip
round contact thingy (how does this connect to brown wire?)
if anyone has any more pics that would be really helpful

ps. there is a horn push insulator on e-bay, do I need one?

You are getting these courtesy of my indicator switch which failed, literally, at the corner to the testing station. I had tested everything the night before but cars will be cars.

what a handy post... had a few horn problems of my own - its earthing somewhere in the steering column and mot due this week, dont have time to do the job properly so am going to install a makeshift switch --- horn -> switch -> earth
