okay, if you read the thread then you know that i will be changing my 803 for a 1098. i will also be changing the 'box as i have been told the 803 one is weak. which is fine, i have found someone who can get me a floor plate(thanks redmoggy!!) im still sourcing the gearstick(any one got one??!!) but the main problem i see is that the floor plate seems to be somewhat different in that it is a different shape(not just where the hole is for the gear lever obviously!) i was wondering if there is anyone out there who could inform me as to how to do it...i know i keep adding threads, but i've found you all amazingly helpful! so thanks, and again, if anyone has a gearstick...pm me...

The 'easy' way to do it involvesa cutting the floor away to make a bigger hole - as per the later cars. This can be reversed if you keep the old piece of floor (and if you are very good at welding!), but it's unlikely that it'll ever be needed as the 1098 combination makes the car so much more useable.

The hard way to do it involves making a hybrid gearbox without the remote extension (keeps the long gearstick). I've never done it or even seen it done but I've heard of it being done a few times so it's certainly possible.

For a car of that age - it really would be better to try to keep it original looking - ie mate the 1098 box to the early gearstick! But it's your car and your choice.

ha, thanks ray, needless to say, the "easy" way definitely seems...well...easier! do i need anything else to do the conversion? is the gearbox support plate the same etc. again, sill questions, but i'd like to get the bits together before starting, because i dont want the car off the road for too long!

hi ecosse, yes i would like to keep the original box, but i was informed that it was quite a poor 'box, and my stick rattles something chronic! if you can say otherwise about the 'box and know of how to stop the stick rattling, i would really appreciate it, as i would rather keep it.
cheers,

They're talking about fitting the stick from the 803cc gearbox to the 1098cc gearbox so it looks the same from inside the car but doesn't shred itself the first time you put your foot down. I don't know what's involved in doing that but I think it's more complicated than just bolting it on.

stupid boy...yes, didn't read the reply properly!
yeah, it all seems so much harder than it needs to be! silly old car!

He still is, but sadly hasn't managed to find it all out.

I think there is a trader in Minor Matter who advertises in this specific conversion.

Surely the easiest solution is to get both boxes sat next to each other.

These sort of things are always easy to work out when you're comparing the both in front of you.
I'd imagine (although I dont know) that with the remote gear mech removed from the 1098 they'd both be very similar animals.

don't forget to notch the front right chassis leg to clear the oil filter!

Hello,

It's definitely worth taking a look at the links below (I hope they work) as this was discussed (in depth) a couple of months ago. If they don't work, search for "803 AND gearbox" and it will bring these posts up. They answer your question I think.

My Series 2 now has 948 running gear, and by swapping the 'fronts' of the 803 and 948 boxes (along with one of the selector rods) I've kept the original long gearstick, which is nice as it keeps the car looking original. This was relatively straightforward, and I wrote more about it in one of the links I've copied in below (can't be bothered to type it again as my hands are aching!!). I think from reading the posts it's a bit harder, but possible, to do the 803-1098 conversion.

Good luck.

I think that the easy way is to just find a later model floor section and notch the floor to accept the new tranny. That what i did on mine at least (when i was running a 1275 in my 52 split). Easy as cake.

:o :o sounds somewhat sketchy, easier if you can find a spin on oil filter setup.

The whole point of the swap and combining boxes is to keep the interior looking original.

small price to pay for much improved driveabilty. What good is a stock looking interior if you can hardly drive it? [/quote]

Hi Callum

I had a terrible rattle on my gear stick a while back, we took the top bit apart and found a side spring was broken, it was to the side of the ball at the bottom of the gearstick.

Replaced the spring and the rattle went. :) I was not the teckie doing this and XWL61 could tell you the name of the bits.

hi people, if you have read my newer threads, i did infact convert the 950 box so that it accomodated the long stick. was very simple, so i was quite happy with it. also...when i first got the car, it had been off the road for about 20 years, so spent a good few months getting it back on the road. unfortunately within all this i did not check the 'box for fluid...so the whineing 'box? yep...no fluid whatsoever...muppet! now that i have changed the 'box, topped it up with fluid, it sounds peachy, smooth changes etc...engine doesnt work properly, but thats a different matter!
