hi all
can any one give me a idear what could be the problem
i over heated in the last winter so i took out the thermostate and was fine ,but it seems to over heat when i go above 60 mph ,the engine is a 1275 mg lump fuel consumtion ant to bad but seen a better over 270 miles on fullish tank
i have flushed the system i leave the heating on all the time but she still over heats tonight it did it as well.but lost a little bit of water once i switched the engine off .
it has a standard carb
no water in oil or oil in water
in fact the oil is very clean (change it every 6 months as its free )\
it has coolant in it .
so any idears would be grate as i would like to drive a bit above 60 once in a while
cheers all
chris

Radiator blocked up - back flush it with a garden hose - that's assuming there isn't something horribly wrong with the engine like blown head gasket/cracked block etc.

I had the same problem, tried everything, flushed the system so many times, suspecteed the head gasket, tried 4 different 'stats. In the end it was a new radiator, problem solved.

Try flushing it through with drain cleaner or similar! I assume the water pump is ok - and you have a fan on the pump boss ? Could use 2 fans - cross them on the water pump pulley - or look out for a 6 blade Midget fan. But really - you should not need ANY fan once the car is moving.

Another possibility is furred up water galleries between the block and the head.

I suppose so - i wouldn't leave it in there too long - maybe an hour max!! Run the engine of course to circulate it and get it good and hot. I mention Mini fan because of course they push air instead of pulling - so would oppose any ram air coming in the grille!

Put a stat that works in or a blanking plate (remove the middle from an old stat). The stat causes turbulance in the system which aids cooling which would explain your problem

I know 'they' say that Matt - but in fact any time I ran without a stat the engine was miserably cold except when being really hammered!
