Just wondering if there are any useful bits to be had from any particular old and abandoned cars that might have a use on a Minor?
Pondering this as there are a lot of older cars – montegos, meistros, cavaliers, volvo’s escorts allsorts really around these parts that never get as far as the scrapyard.
Cant help but go into scrapheap mode when passing some of these wrecks. Certain old Volvos e.g have a great part for home made wind turbines so wondered if anyone has found anything suitable on scrappers and if so what and from which particular car?

I'm curious now Orkney, what bit of a Volvo can you use for a wind turbine.

I bought a Volvo 144 estate as scrap for 35 quid 20yrs ago and got another 2 yrs out of it, the rear shocks I put on it were nearly new from a Lada and the radiator I salvaged I think from a vauxhall cavalier.

actually its the front strut + hub & brake disc, theres quite a famous design and many of them in operation using them.

As Mr Ginger says - there are brake parts to be salvaged from a variety of cars. Marina discs are popular - as are the larger drum brakes mentioned above!

well this is a list of all the ones I know off the top of my head:

minis and some mg metros have the A series engine, so lots of engine parts are similiar or the same, also the wheels from minis and earlier mg metros have the same PCD,

wolsely 1500 and riley 1.5 front and rear brakes are an easy fit and larger than the minor ones, also differential/halfshafts etc from these two cars

mg midget engine is a direct swap, also wheels and all drivetrain bits.

probably missed some

Lots of older cars have SU carbs which are of use too...

Round headlights are interchangeable with many old cars (think Mini / Land Rover / Trabant / Polo etc...)
It's always worth to take all the sidelight bulbs etc. for spares if a car is scrapped

okay...next thing on the agenda...my 803 is god awful slow, now i knew it was going to be slow...but really...i mean horrific! (i had a supra before, would that explain it??) but i was wondering...and don't all call me rude words, what would happen if i fitted a twin carb to the car? i don't want to change the engine as it is the original one that came with the car...fire away with the obscenities...

I don't think anyone will be rude about it, but (I'm in no way an expert, btw) general consensus seems to be that there's not much point. Doubtlessly somebody will be along to say why - or why it's a good idea

well thats quite good to know, as ive been toying with the idea, but the twins have been going for 70 odd quid on ebay...so thought id wait, but if it wont do much in the way of performance, then i guess i won't bother...mmm...super acceleration!

3 Series front seats will fit a moggie with a suitable sub frame.

Only use the `A` series bits not the awful 1500 parts.

I went though all the options in 1970's when I had an A30 with a 803.
Simple answer is don't waste time or money.
Far easier to buy a 1098 (although the 948 in my A35 is quite good).

You'd have twice the rebuild costs.

That's about it IMO.

Though if twins are fetching £70 or more I might clean up the spare pair I've got...

You mean DB5 to replace the minor completely

I seem to remember Practical Classics magazine did a Parts Interchangeability Guide (PIG) a year or so ago. I'm sure they'd sell the back issues which included it.

What a result this morning - just found a marina estate - r reg, very good engine and box thats in someones way and was heading for the scrapyard imminently !
Think I'll end up with a scrapyard here at this rate

Assume its worth stripping the marina for brakes, engine, box & axle before cutting up the rest to get carted away - is there anything else worth taking off? Most of the glass is there as are the lights etc, interiors no good, just thought would be a shame to throw away anything that might be useful to a marina owner.
