any chance anyone can send a pic of the gaps between the door and side window and winscreen surround, refitting a new door. bottom seems too tight top big gaps.
walked away from it in frustration.

thanks jonathon for bay paint advice

The gap should be even and identical to that on a saloon. Any deviation from that would suggest distortion from accident damage to the floorpan, corrosion and sagging from the structure or insufficient care during a rebuild.

The gap between the B pillar and the rear vertical edge of the door should be even, if the door is adjusted to achieve this condition and the gap is then poor between the front wing and the front of the door then the wing itself can be manipulated. If you cannot adjust to an even gap at the B pillar because it ruins the alignment with the windscreen angle then the car has been rebuilt out of true.

i revisited the car today
passenger door acceptable gaps
drivers door hinge pillar has had plates welded in and i suspect it is out of true causing tight fit at bottom of door
do i cut out the welds and re-allign?

If the tight fit is at the leading edge then you can make up shims to move the whole door backwards IF there is room at the trailing edge!
IF there is not enough space overall in the door opening then yes, you
will have to do something drastic such as moving the A pillar forwards to where it should be. Easy to say!

Oh yes I did, earlier, but there was a fault on the site and posts could not be sent. Appears ok now though. I would have to decline your kind offer of a swop.
