Wash Out

I tried to take Sophie to her first rally today. Fortunately it wasn't far from home because, firstly, when I got there it was a sea of mud and there was a 4X4 stuck in the entrance making it worse so I turned around and went home.
And secondly the voltage regulator fried itself on the way home. I just disconnected the dynamo and drove home on the battery Dynamo seems to be ok so have ordered a new regulator. Perhaps 20 years of inactivity wasn't good for it. All I did before I refitted it was clean the contacts. The varnish has burnt off the coils so I suspect the varnish was breaking down hence the burning smell!!

In emergency it's easy enough to bypass the regulator and force the dynamo to give full charge !! Don't do it for long - will fry battery longterm - but for 30 mins or so is ok and will ensure a good charge in the battery!
