Just something that you might be interested in!

Last week I decided to eventualy replace the gearbox in my morris as it kept jumping out of gear 2, I also had to replace an oil seal on the timing chain cover, so naturaly I decided to take the complete engine and gearbox out and clean it all up! :D :D

here is the original, oil splattered, rusty, dirty engine bay with grubby, paintless engine;

here is the engine out, head and external components removed;

Here is the engine block and sump after the re-paint;

Here are the pistons after a de-coke;

Clutch and timing chain checked for wear;

Newly painted manifolds and inspection plates;

The bagging system! A4 wallets with permanent pen written on the top;

All the external parts for engine and clutch;

The head before it was cleaned and re-painted;

The completed engine! almost ready to go back in;

I then cleaned up the engine bay, primed it and re-sprayed it the same as the car colour (Old english White);

The very dodgy engine hoist! but it did work!;

Also when the car was in bits I re-sprayed the front grill as the paint was starting to get scabby, but I do not have a final picture yet.

Good going. I'm curious about the engine hoist - did you lift it out of the car on the pole, and if so how difficult was it? Mine's got to come out sooner or later, and I'm looking for a quick and easy way :roll:

To get the engine out, we simply unbolted the whole lot and two of us lifted it straight out!

We only built the hoist becuase to get it back in we had to line it up with the prop which would be very hard with the wieght of the engine! You dont realy want to be hanging around with it waiting for someone to slowly line up the prop.

The engine stayed where it was and then we rolled the car over it!

Excellent job!

I knew someone would find a sensible use for one of these wheeled bins one day.

Maybe a Health & Safety guy would do a bit of head scratching if they saw the approach. :D

Those corrugated cylinder head to water pump bypass pipes have a bit of a poor reputation for reliability.

Interesting to see latest type rocker gear on that very early engine ! If you want to see my 'child's swing' based hoist have a look at badfelafels website http://www.badfelafel.co.uk/ which shows us changing his engine last week-end. Sadly we didn't have time for any painting!!

bmcecosse, I love that hoist swing thing. Plenty of room either side as well. It looks just like an old Haltrac gantry that I have been trying to get a hold for ages. Now I'll be looking for a swing instead which should be easier to find!

Yes -me in the pink. We use the gloves at work (ultra dry conditions - no hand moisture allowed!) and at the end of the day most throw them in the bin - mine come home with me.
The hoist comes to bits in about 3 minutes - and fits easily in the back of my Traveller.
Andrew - the head may well be original - it still has the little 'hairpin' clips on the valves that were dropped about 30 years ago - but the rocker gear is definitely very much later ex Mini. No harm in that - it's likely to be less worn!

the rocker gear is the smae as a mini or metro one, dont worry works the same and if you order a new one itll be the same.
