fitted new clutch something wrong

well i got my car on the road and all was well apart from the clutch slipping,so i orderd a kit and done the job,nice and easy apart from trying to get the bolts out the floor!!before i done the job i had awfull vibration when depressing the clutch.so i thought new clutch cure that,i was wrong,after fitting a new clutch kit it was still there,i removed the rubber bungs and had a look whats happening,when the clutch release bearing just touches the cover its vibrating around like mad,ive worked out that the part that the release bearing touches isnt running true.but why??everything went back no problem,and it was doing the same before the new clutch,does the floor have to come out when doing the clutch??or can i get away with it?any help would be good.

Was this an entire new kit Lee? Or just a release bearing? I had similar problems after fitting a new kit, there was a problem with the springs causing the steel ring (that the carbon bearing presses against) to run out of true.

it was a complete kit,it looks like the ring is out of true like you say,nitemare,looks like the box has got to come out again then and another new clutch to be fitted

take it all back to the supplier and get another one

First check the flywheel is running true! And the clutch needs to be tightened up nice and evenly round and round - bit by bit. It's easier to pull the engine than it is to pull the gearbox!

if its the same vibration as on the old clutch then you need to look elsewhere.could be the flywheel. Take the starter motor off.and put some sort of bar through the hole onto the flywheel and hold it steady.get someone to turn the engine and see if the flywheel is running true.Unlikely but easy to check.failing that its all out again for a good look at everything.Good luck with it

I recently fitted a new clutch , the holes in the pressure plate for the locating pins on the flywheel were much too small & had to be drilled out. This I believe could give rise to the same symptoms . You may be able to check both for this & flywheel running true using a technique similar to that suggested by kenatt but through the hole in the gearbox opposite the release lever. Suggest remove the plugs & ask someone to turn over the engine using the starter handle . Good luck. Andy.

hi again im going to do the job this week when i can pinch the ramp in work,i was told that you can adjust the springs on the pressure plate??ive looked at my old pressure plate and can see 3 screws with lock nuts,im not going too as i cant see how you can possibly set it up.it was a cheaper clutch out the 2,its getting the more expensive one next time.serve me right,ive checked the flywheel and it seems spot on.i have a knowen good second hand one thats going to be fitted.so fingers crossed its going to be ok

Check the gearbox input shaft isn't bent (can happen!) and that there is a little bronze (oilite) bush inside the tail of the crankshaft for the nose of the gearbox shaft to locate in.

thanks for your reply,ill check the shaft,i have a spare gearbox but unsure what its like or i would use that,i replaced the brass bush in the end of the crank when i done the clutch for what it cost.

well i had the box out today,the clutch pressure plate was at fault,even with it off the car you could see the thurst ring was out of line,new borg and beck clutch gone in and its right as rain!!with a new starter!!
