Black Mastic

I remember a short while ago I asked about Dum-Dum ?.

Well since then I have been unable to find it anywhere, even at car shows !! However, last week I came across a tin of Black Mastic for roofing in an Agricultural store in Waterford. Reading the side it appeared to be exactly the same as Dum-Dum- looked the same, worked that same, tasted the same etc, so....... my question is ...... am I ok in buying this stuff and using it on my Traveller ?

Is Dum-Dum just a fancy product name for Black Mastic anyway and that any unbranded black mastic will do just as well ???

esm and other suppliers sell dum-dum

I'm not sure that mastic will stay as soft after a period of time open to the elements, it has a tendancy to set and crack

So presumably then the Dum-Dum is a totally different product, similar, but different. It would appear it lasts longer given its chemical properties, is that it. Basically, although the two products are similar, the recommendation is to use Dum-Dum ?

bought a large tin of dum dum from a trader who advertises in minor matters
the tel no of the co who supplied is on my tin?
not sure if i can name trader names on this site?

I had a tin of dum dum inthe garage nearly empty and 35 years old when I opened it it was good as new.

The Dum dum on my travellers rotten wood side that I removed in 2004 was still good after 35 years on the car! It outlasted the wood, in fact I'm tempted to roll it up and use it again.

Dum dum is good stuff- you do have to top it up in the gaps between wood and metal from time to time though. I got mine from ESM whom I largely have positive criticism for.

I don't know what this Dum Dum stuff is but I always use non-setting gutter sealant for my jobs.
It never sets but does skin enough not to come off on your clothes.

Its the perfect stuff for sealing joins. Normal black mastic sets and only lasts a couple of months before it shrinks or splits away from whatever you're fitting, agitated by extremes of weather and movement.
Non setting black sealant will never do this and as it never sets you can take things apart and re-assemble them without replacing the sealant - it's still tacky and ready to use.

That sounds very similar to Dum Dum.
