Okay, after having a puncture and replacing said flat with the spare wheel, I now am thinking about getting on with tidying up my wheels over the next few weeks. I can rotate them as I go with the spare (I also have a secondary spare so no worries about tootling around without one) so that I can keep using the car.
I have a few questions, though;

What can I use to remove the surface rust? (Yes, I know all about elbow grease, just need to know what tools/equipment are best.)

My wheels have no paint, and I'd like to paint them;

What undercoat/primer do I use?

What type of topccoat do I use? (I can't spray so want brush-on - preferably not Hammerite!)

My car is almond green, what colour is "correct"? I'd prefer to get a close match to the body as I think almond green wheels would look nice, but I've heard that they're supposed to be cream/white?

And how the blinking hell does one get a tyre off without damaging the wheel or the tyre?!

Please note, answers must be pitched to lowest common denominator and don't get overly technical as I've never done this before - I'm an artist, don't expect me to be bright!

Take each wheel to your local tyre company or garage.

brush-on - preferably not Hammerite!)

Woah!

Don't take tyre off. Remove any old paint with stripper and/or wire brush by hand or in drill. Just undercoat with primer/ucoat from B&Q and finish with Magnolia gloss also B7Q. It's very close to Old English White. As an artist - you will have no problems painting the wheels without painting the tyres! - however I use a bit of masking tape to make it easier for me.

Ok artist, paint the walls of the tyres with neat washing up liquid and you can splash around as much as you like. Any wayward paint will just wash off.

Apologies if I offended anyone with the artist comment, I was attempting some light-hearted humour. Obviously it fell flat, I won't bother in future.

We don't take offence here. Most of us realise the limitations of messageboard text. 'Smileys' help but the right emphasis doesn't always come across.

My advice..............Remove the tyres and have the rims blasted, then prime and paint the whole rim, it is well worth it

£5 a rim

Blast and powder coating is around £35 per rim. Standard silver,white or black, high power silver is also available,(as in BMW alloys) Depending on the normal range of colours used by the powder coaters many more colours are available.

Where did you get those done?

Still might try having a bash at it myself - with one wheel spare, I can afford to play around a bit. Got a few wire brushes kicking around, the other half uses them for his own hobbies, so with the lighter evenings it might be nice to try something like this out in the garden.
