Hi, my 1968 moggie gearbox makes a horrible rattling noise when in third gear. It's sounds ok in every other gear, just 3rd is the problem. What could this be?

Probably terminal damage to mainshaft bearings and/or laygear/layshaft and it's bearings. Start looking for another box urgently!

My sisters had similar symptoms the other week and it turned out to be a chipped tooth (well one missing and another chipped!

) on third only. As you say, fine in all other gears, just in third! Needless to say the gearbox was changed!

I don't understand how that can happen - unless a 'foreign body' goes through the box - because the Third gears run in mesh all the time. Most likely source of fb of course is from First or Reverse gears - which can shed teeth if not treated with respect.

sound liek the fate that my gear box suffered.
there was always a bit of a wine in 3rd and then one day all of a sudden it was impossible to drive in 3rd so i got the box reconditioned.
it might last a long time before it goes, but best be prepared with a spare box hopefully you have plenty of time to find a cheap one.
