I AM TRYING TO FIT A NEW WATER PUMP TO MY 1098 MORRIS TRAVELLER AFTER THE BEARING ON MY OLD ONE BECAME NOISEY BUT THE NEW ONE KEEPS LEAKING FROM BETWEEN THE NEW GASKET I AM USING RED HERMETITE BETWEEN THE GASKET ON BOTH SIDES AND MADE SURE BOTH SURFACES WERE CLEAN. THE WATER PUMP WAS PURCHASED FROM A LOCAL MOTOR FACTOR. ANY SUGGESTIONS TO HOW TO CURE THIS PROBLEM?
MANY THANKS
JASON

Make sure it can seat properly on the block - modern pumps have larger impeller which can foul on the casing of #1 cylinder - you may have to grind metal off the cylinder wall and/or off the impeller. It shouldn't need any gasket goo !

Jason,

Did you get one of the cast metal ones? I bought one a couple of years' ago and had the same problem.

Om the engine block there are 2 locating lugs. There are matvhing depressions in the pump face. In my case, there depressions were not quite deep enough - no matter how tight one spannered, or how much gasket goo I used it wouldn't seal.

There are 2 cures:- 1) get the supplier to give you a correctly fitting pump.
2) take a power drill and deepen the recesses for the location lugs (I went all the way through anf tidied up with a file.

Clean carefully, replace.

Cheers.
