Insurance for young Morris driver

Hi there,
Can anyone recommend any good insurance companies, especially those that look kindly upon new young drivers in Morrises? After what seems like an eternity, I've finished fixing my old two door and I'm nearly ready to take to the roads in it (yipee!!!), but I need to sort out the insurance. Any other 19 year old Minor owners out there with decent quotes?

Pretty sure most 'classic car' policies have 21 minimum. We used CIS for daughter's insurance on a Mini - but the car was mine and I was 'principle' driver.

Try Firebond http://www.firebond.co.uk/ - they're pretty good

Try HIC.

They'll ask you if you're in any clubs, susbscribe to magazines etc.. just tell em you do. Apparently it puts the premium down (dubious but worth a try).

When I used to be into my fast fords they were the only people that would insure me for less than 4 figures a year.

I am 18 and am insured with FootMan James. Although on the website they say 21, that only applies to the online quote. ring them up and they will quote you.

Mine is only £400 3Rd Party Fire and Theft.

Mine was £325 fully comp with AON and club discount. But with a stack of other drivers named.

I was with AON for years. They gave me fully comprehensive cover and business use as standard. They were one of the few places that would accept me because for classic car insurance you usually have to be over 25, often over 21, AND have use of another car as your main vehicle.

IIRC at 18 (with a full UK licence) it was £620, at 21 it was £400-ish, then it came down to £320.

After that, I defected to proper classic insurance. Bought a modern car for daily use and am revelling in paying around £90 for the year. :)

Thanks very much everyone. I'll be trying to sort the insurance out once and for all over the next week, which will mean that getting an MOT (!) is the only thing stopping me driving the Morris to the Dorset Branch rally in a couple of weeks.

I've just had a good quote from AON, which is £658 fully comp. Far, far better than what another company wanted to charge me (over two grand to insure a Minor - absolute madness!), although still a bit much for me. I'll certainly be checking Footman James out, as well as a couple of others.

I'm not a 'young' driver but still young at heart
I think you will find that Footman James is a little more expensive than AON :-? I've just rang them for a quote after receiving my renewal premium from my present insurer, AON.. even though the price has risen they blame it on inflation etc; etc; but both companies give a discount for MMOC members and I have been with both over the years and both are first class, I've decided to just grin & bear it with AON and pay up my £98 for two cars

Just out of interest, whereabouts in Dorset are you?

It'd be nice to swap tales of rust and tuning ideas with another owner.

(I haven't joined the club as I don't have the time or petrol money to get me to Bournemouth regularly).

Odd that, I found FJ a lot cheaper - I was paying just over three hundred quid for fully comp with AON, then rang FJ for a quote and got fully comp for just over one hundred! It's always worth doing that boring work of ringing around for quotes, it pays to spend a few hours tediously going through your details with various companies as you could save quite a significant amount.
Then again, being well over 21 helps!

I'm not that much over 21   I just had a long paper round and tend to lie a little

I think you have to bear in mind what exactly the insurance covers, ie; agreed value, unlimited miles, breakdown cover etc; etc; I have no problems with FJ and found that like for like they were just slightly more expensive for the same cover.

Hi everyone,

In the end, I went with Footman James. They were about the same as AON for fully comp, but unlike AON gave me the option of opting for third party at just over £300 (which I took).

Now the old Morris is insured and tomorrow will be going in for its first MOT since I bought it. Wish me luck!

If all goes to plan, Dorset rally here I come! Anyone else going?

By the way, dunketh, I'm over east Dorset way in Wimborne. See you about, perhaps? Although I have plenty of rust experience, I haven't yet acheived my dream of rebuilding and tuning up my old 1098cc engine. It'll be some time before the Morris and I take to the drag strip...
