How difficult should it be....

To remove the gearbox from the propshaft? Everything is undone and out of the way (including engine of course) so I'm expecting it just to pull off. But it won't budge

I'm guesing you are trying to pull the gearbox forwards into the engine bay? Have you also undone the 'rapid stop' cable?

I'm holding a stout 3" square length of timber against the gearstick section of the box and whacking it with a lump hammer (obviously not while I'm typing this - I'm not an octopus

) but still no joy.

Before you do some damage I would release the four bolts on the diff pinion to prop shaft joint and then pull the prop rearwards. It should just slide out and you must have drained the gearbox first!!!

do as willie says, the prop should slide off the gear box with ease,if it's still stuck then try to lever the prop backwards,it could be stuck on the splines at the gear box, don't use too much force of you could damage the gearbox case.If it is stuck you should be able to pull the gearbox and propshaft forwards after the rear of the prop is unbolted from the diff. If you can't then something is still attached on the gearbox. It's easy to miss an odd bolt. Good luck with it

I assume the crossmember has been removed (dont mean to sound condesending) and do as the others have mentioned take the prop of first.

yes it is. everything is away. the gearbox can be 'looped' around in the gap in the front panel.

Very strange - take the prop shaft off the diff and remove them together for further investigation.

With my able assistant (PaulK) I succeded in doing just that. Not that the two would separate though after we dragged them onto the lawn for a good pummelling. Never mind' I'll let Plusgas have a go and use the spare prop from Joemog.

Do let us know if you ever work out what was holding it on. Thought I'd had every daft problem on a Mog, but I've never had this one

Can only imagine the splines have somehow twisted and now can't release!

Hence my question to Peetee - can imagine myself, but want to know...

Yes, I'll let everyone know but right now I can't think how I'm going to separate them!!!!!
The 1275 I previously removed gave no problem with the propshaft. I think it might be time to look again at the 948 - perhaps the previous owner ran it on methanol or NO²
