Post by toulky »

Need to fit anti theft device crooK lock etc Have been looking at the Autolok system that locks the gear shift to the handbrake. Can anyone recommend these or alternative systems?

The handbrake/gearstick lock is a waste of money IMHO. I have a disklok for mine as it completely covers the steering wheel. Would be worth fitting a cut out switch for the fuel pump too as it will only travel a couple of hundred yards before conking out.

Hidden switch for the pump is the way to go - try to put it somewhere NOT obvious! Handbrake/gear lever thing - waste of time - just take the knob off and you're away!. Steering wheel thing main attribute is - it's obvious.

I used the switch for the dash lights. It is very small and you can hide it anywhere.

There are some interesting ideas here - http://www.the12volt.com/relays/page2.asp - for kill circuits.

Open bonnet, pull off little coil lead.

Job done.

Also makes for endless comedy anecdotes when you forget you've done it and try in vane to start the thing.

Ah, the old ideas are best. However, all these things are fine but wont stop them if they come along with their lorry and crane!! and don't think they wont, cause its been known. Plug it into the mains (if only that were legal!!) mind you even that could backfire if you forgot yourself to reverse it...that would stop them.. :D give them a good old shock anyway  I suppose anything is better than nothing!!...mind you, you could always weld the doors shut and wire up the glass.....or get the wife/girlfriend to pull the engine crane and lift out the engine, take the wheels off and let the kids play with them till you get back when going shopping. In fact, the wheels idea is best, cause everytime I go shopping I get the wonky trolley...could put the wheels on the trolley and whizzzz round the shops! (must see if I can patent that one)

Any device / idea is better than doing nothing to protect your property from the slime that pray on other people's property.

A while ago our local paper had a story about a stolen Harley Davidson.
The owner was going on holiday so he secured it in his garage and then blocked the doors with his car.
He came back to find thieves had simply removed the rear panels out of his concrete garage, taken down neighbours fences and removed the bike that way.
Moral of story is you can''t stop the pond life if they really want something - just make is so difficult they go elsewhere.
Even removing engine , wheels etc won't stop them Hi-aB the remains away for just the scrap metal value.

i can remeber a few years ago someone decided to nick my renault 21 turbo, of course had all the antitheft etc also concealed radio.
so they decided as it was not easy to get in, they just smashed all the window glass, could not get radio out so decided to just smash the entire front console.
so after that i just left it unlocked, at least they would not do any damage getting in

make it difficult they just smash there way in, doing hundreds of pounds of damage, make it easy and less damage, joy riders

i do not really have the answer,

I've put in a hidden switch for the coil - same principle as the fuel pump, but it won't even start.
Of course if they have any basic knowledge they can quickly get around it, but I'm hoping they are too young to know what a coil is :)
First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

Just thought of something a bit off the wall. A spare electric washer pump, reservoir and windscreen washer jets hidden under the dash but pointed at the driver and wired to a two way switch. Normally the car starts, activated the driver gets a spraying of... water if you want to keep it legal, cat pee, yellow dye or worse if you don't :)

But this might make the thief take out a personal vendetta against you or the car.

Just going off topic a moment;

When I was 18 (and donkeys wore straw hats) I had an Austin 1100 and fitted a third washer jet for squirting bus queues and cyclists as I over took them. I've often thought of doing it again with a jet on the outside to spray water at passing chaves in their hot hatches.
