1098 with 2 inch mains

does anyone know are the main bearings readily available,i've taken this engine out of a scrapped 66 midget and plan to make a quickish engine out of it for another mog prodgect,ive got a 1275 in my soft top with all mg metro inards,how tunable do you guys recon the 1098 is? regards glyn

If that engine number starts with 10CC it has the most suitable mains
for any tuning you wish to do. As always there is no substitute for cc's.

yea i got vizards book but was wandering about availability of the mains as its a bit of an unusual eng and am getting the head done to run unleaded witha kent cam and vernier pulley I have a few 1275 engines but would like to see what i couls get out of the 1098...glyn

Whatever the case they are available, but I can't find my Moss catalogue right now to check the quality/ price (and can't be bothered firing up IE just to get their site to work).
As the 1275 is such a common engine for thrashing I'd imagine good bearings should be common enough (I hope so, I'm tghinking of rebuilding a 10CC myself at some point).

i seem to think but not sure has the 1275 got 2'' bearings? or are they 1.75?????...glyn

The 2" mains are the same as early 1275 engines - it's THE 1098 engine to have - and of course that crank fitted into a 1275 block gives something like 1340 cc on standard bores - and almost 1400 cc if you fit +60 pistons !! The piston crowns need machining down of course to stop them sticking out the top of the block - so pistons with thick crowns are needed - and rings not too near the top either. But it can be done. Usual tuning mods apply - but 1098 crank doesn't like much over 6000 rpm for any time - so don't go for too long a camshaft - MG Metro cam would be ideal. And the biggest valve head you can find! ie Mg Metro (early one) oir better still real Cooper S head.

so are u saying i can fit a 1275 crank ito the 1098 block,what conrods? would be used,i,ve got a 13 stud s head off a 1300 gt,probably an mg metro late cam the same as i used in my 1275 engine,thanks for advice...glyn

Well you could - but that would give something LESS than 1098 cc. The idea is to use the long stroke 1098 2" mains crank in a 1275 block! The head will be 11 stud - not 13 - check the valve sizes, you want them large as possible. 'Kent' cam could be anything - does it have a number stamped on the drive end ? MG Metro cam is very good up to 6000/6500 - loads of torque without stupidly high valve lift to wear out the followers or the guides!
